How To Replace Foundation Water Proofing the Right Way

This is a photo-essay on repairing the waterproofing on a wood foundation. I have written previously about wood foundations HERE.

This foundation had not experienced any serious failures even though it is over 35 years old. But it did need to be re-waterproofed. So here are the photos:

Foundation Excavation

Foundation Excavation

Excavate the foundation to the footer.

Primer

Primer

Use Primer to ensure the water-proof membrane adheres well

Water Proofiing

Water Proofiing

Apply the waterproof membrane

Mastic

Mastic

Use Mastic on the seams

Foam insulation

Foam insulation

Foam Insulation is optional.
It makes your house warmer,
and protects the water proof membrane,
but adds some complications.

Flashing

Flashing

You need flashing over the foamboard
to eliminate water intrusion between
the foam board and the membrane.
And you need something over the flashing to
ensure that water drains over it. This house
will be re-sided over the flashing.

Backfill

Backfill

Backfill to grade, making sure the
grade slopes AWAY from the building.

You can do it yourself or just call these guys.
They did a good job.
